Why you need to actually READ your insurance policy!

I have not the slightest doubt that car insurance is probably one of the most boring subjects you can think about, and something you do not wish to spend any of your hard earned leisure time thinking about. In many ways I cannot blame you, and if you are quite happy to throw good money away, possibly several thousand pounds or even more, then it is perhaps best that you give it no more thought. The hard and simple fact however is that spending just a little bit of your time chewing over a few sheets of paper could save you a very very considerable sum indeed. Interested? I thought you might be!

When we deal with insurance we are not dealing with something as simple as a bar of soap or a leather three-piece suite. Insurance documents are highly complex instruments and if you have never read through one in your life then congratulations, you are in exactly the same situation as about 99.9% of the British population. This is perhaps one of the reasons why so many people in Britain look at one thing and one thing only when they buy car insurance; the price.

If you get involved in an accident and it is adjudged to be your fault the costs may add up to several hundred pounds if you are lucky, several thousand pounds if you are unlucky or hundreds of thousands of pounds if you are very, very unlucky. Whether the insurance company will pay for all of this, a fraction of it, or none at all depends upon what is included in that insurance document. It is no use whatsoever if you are faced with a huge bill which is not covered by your own insurance policy to complain that you thought that it had been covered automatically; if the circumstances of the accident are not specifically mentioned in the policy you have to assume that they are not likely to be paid for. So, when you are shopping around for the lowest price car insurance policy on a price comparison website, at least spend a little time reading through exactly what it is that you are paying for before making a buying decision. You may save yourself a few pounds by shopping around, you may save yourself many thousands of pounds by checking the policy before you buy it.
